Rumors of my passing are greatly exaggerated

sparkle!

Hello! Stop googling me to see if I died. I’m here, I’m here. :)

Since I last wrote here, so much has happened!

  • There was Christmas, which was lovely, spent in the home of my awesome in-laws. There wasn’t enough snow for my taste, but it’s all good.
  • New Year’s Eve was spent with my journal, my husband, his sister, and a trio of terrible movies, as is our annual tradition.
  • Fort Collins First Friday Gallery Walk was fun and I made a few wee sales.
  • I turned 43 in January. Yikes! The birthday was pretty good, although I woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. (I wonder why…)
  • Art? What art? Oh, ok, I worked on a few pieces, but nothing is finished except for this one tiny snowflake screen. I’ve had four canvases in process for the past 6 months. Maybe February will be the month to finish?!
  • I am the new gallery administrator at the Poudre River Arts Center. Between that, marketing, working in my studio, working on my web design business, taking care of the house, husband and dogs, well, I’m a bit overextended. I’m working on that, but right now, I’m very tired.
  • However, I am also rejuvenated! I used to find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, but since I’ve become so involved at PRAC, my life feels meaningful again. What a concept!

As soon as I post this entry (and quickly send out a letter to my mailing list), I am going into the studio for some uninterrupted art time. Gallery Walk starts at 6, but I’m sure whatever I work on will be dry by then!!

wreck this journal week 2

Hi everybody — Week 2 is complete!

I did some wrecking, although not as much as I would have liked. It’s been a very busy week, so I ended up forgetting the book a lot. Now I am trying to take it with me wherever I go. I think it caught a few curious looks as it sat on the conference table at my SBDC class this morning. Today at lunch, Venita recommended a book to me and I scribbled the title on the first page so as not to forget it.

I’m kinda beat from all of the learning and working I’ve been doing this week, so I’m not going to write too much more about wrecking my journal. On a whim, I vlogged instead. Whipped open Photo Booth without giving it a second thought and created the video you see here.

This is HUGE for me because I don’t want people to see me. (Let’s not even go there, ok?) There is also a video of Doug the Dog helping me wreck my journal, recorded with the video thingie on my Palm Centro. enjoy!

quilty bookmark

I whipped this up tonight as a Christmas gift for my therapist. I woke up in the middle of the night one night this weekend, thinking that she needed a bookmark, a small little something as a token of my appreciation for all of the help she’s given me this year. I already had the painted pieces from my Lisa Englebrecht class in May and a couple of scraps. I’m extremely pleased with this piece. The stamp is a Bob Dylan quote: “I’d be lost if not for you…” and comes from the fabulous Ma Vinci’s Reliquary. The little star and circle rubons are from Heidi Grace.

Apparently, I’ve been tagged

I’ve been tagged by Beth and now I must to say 7 random things about myself. Since this is an art blog, I’m just doing art-related random facts. Here they are:

1. I always want to add glitter or rhinestones or sparkly brads or sparkle pen marks to my artwork.

2. Blue is my go-to color. Any blue.

3. I think Glue Dots are the best invention ever.

4. Followed closely by the Crop-a-Dile.

5. I can’t see the floor in my studio right now.

6. I am currently on a self-imposed craft supply embargo because I have more stuff than I can possibly use. But if I see cool decorative tape or pens that I need, I can’t stop myself.

7. One of my favorite albums to listen to when I am making backgrounds is the Proclaimers “Sunshine on Leith”.

Now I tag you guys:

AEDM: Days 10 – 11 – 12 – 13 – 14

This week seems to be devoid of the kind of creativity I was hoping to achieve each day, but I did manage to get in a bit of art/creativity despite the busy work week.

Day 10 (Monday): Played the “what-bills-can-I-pay-on-time-with-the-money-I-have-while-the-deposit-I-just-made-is-clearing” game. That is super creative, believe you me!

Day 11 (Tuesday): Worked on a logo for my friend. I want to show it here, but I don’t know that she’s ready for that. I still need to do a couple of alternate designs. This kind of work is really fun for me. I also shot the photos of my work during the weekend at the Kelly Kilmer workshops.

Day 12 (Wednesday): I went to trivia with Tim and we came in 3rd! Trivia night always requires some creative thinking!

Day 13 (Thursday): Faced with a few challenges, I managed work around it to get everything done without completely freaking out, which was a huge growth experience for me.

Day 14 (Friday): Worked on clearing up the office a bit, and began my big ole reorganization plan. I sorted beads, rhinestones, brads, eyelets, charms and MORE! I also found a whole bunch of stuff I forgot about, which could is definitely going to enhance my creativity.

Hm…am I stretching it? I feel like I’m stretching it. That’s ok, because this weekend will be jam-packed with creativity, as I have a swap deadline looming and it has to mail out by Day 21.

Where have I been? Building a cool scrapbooking supplies website!

The past (almost) two months have been very busy with work and life things. I usually don’t blog here about personal stuff because this blog is all about art. For those who aren’t in the know, my days are spent as a freelance website designer/consultant. I have been spending a lot of time working lately. So much so that my web design blog and this blog, not to mention my Live Journal and my personal paper journal have all gone dormant. And let’s not even talk about how much my craft table misses me! I’m working on fixing all of that, though. Dealing with some heavy personal issues and work challenges definitely require some good old fashioned art therapy.

Speaking of art therapy, sometimes we also require shopping therapy. I can’t really do much of that right now, but I thought I’d pass on some info about this cool site. Granted, I built it, so I’m also being a proud mama. ;) This is my biggest web project to date: The Memory Zone Scrapbooking Store, LLC.

Those who know me know I am not a scrapbooker by any stretch of the imagination, but I love going to scrapbook stores for all of the cool tools, stickers, embellishments and other fun toys they have. I recently shopped at the The Memory Zone’s online scrapbooking store and I was impressed with their service and selection. I got a few doodling templates and the cool Basic Grey paper file kit.

The Memory Zone is located in Plymouth, Indiana. Rhonda and Marlene, the sisters who run the store, are completely devoted to their customers, providing great service and instruction. If you’re in the area, please do go and check them out, take a class or two! If you’re looking for an online scrapbooking store, complete with free scrapbooking ideas and QuicKutz products, surf on over!

I’ll get back here with some photos soon. Since I last posted some artwork, I took classes with Michael deMeng and Tejae Floyd, so I have some YUMMY stuff to show off!

shrine class with Nancy Anderson

Well, it’s about time I dusted off this art journal and typed something in. I’ve been lazy, writing little bits here and there about art stuff in my personal journal, but not really expounding on anything. And definitely not showing enough photos. Of course, I’m also not making enough art, either. I haven’t been feeling well and that makes a big difference on how productive I can be.

So, here I go!

Yesterday, i took a class with Nancy Anderson of Boulder. She does a lot of jewelry, metalworking and shrine stuff. She is a BIG fan of found objects. Basically, she’s doing what I started doing years ago and then sort of stopped. She does it much better, too. The class was good for me in several ways:

1. I learned how to drill a hole into metal and into wood. Now I know what I want for Christmas.
2. I learned how to metal stamp (harbor freight, here I come!)
3. I learned how to rust things.
4. I re-learned how to find beauty and purpose in the most unassuming of cast-away objects.

I had already had a vision for the shrine I wanted to make in this class. I have been collecting pieces of crap from gramma and grampa’s house for years. Old cocktail napkins from their restaurant, gramma’s broken old costume jewelry, a paintbrush that I think was grandpa’s, all sorts of odditties. I also pulled together things I found elsewhere that reminded me of them. Littlle tiny mirrors, buttons in gold and ivory. Mom scanned a ton of old photos and some of grandma’s handwritten recipes and send them to me. It all would make for a very cool and nostalgic pieces (for me). An homage to two of the most important people in my life.

Since I had that all sorted out in my head already, i didn’t go in for the heavy rusted look like some of the others were doing. I loved what they were doing, of course, but I already had a mission. Unfortunately I had to wait a long time for the instructor to cut the hole in my door (my only complaint) and I got a pretty late start on really making my shrine come together.

Lately I’ve been having some serious nostalgia issues. I’ve also been really thrown off with my fertility “treatment,” if you can call it that (a story for another day) and I’ve been highly emotional, scattered, distracted and out of sorts. So while I was collecting all of these items for class, I cried. I cried a lot. I was worried I would cry all through class, to the point where I didn’t really want to go. It wasn’t an option, though, considering what I’d paid for the class.

So I went. Nancy had us do the sit-in-a-circle-and-talk thing first, which was nice especially because there were quite a few new faces that day. Well, i tell you, there had to be something in the air because we were all talking about having a rough week, about art teachers who tore us down so much when we were younger that we avoided being creative, close people in our lives who didn’t support our creative dreams and who even came out and mocked them. Another woman said that last time she was in fort collins for something was when she had broken her back and she burst into tears. Another woman lost her husband of 30-something years in August. It was amazing to realize I wasn’t alone. And most of us were crying by the time that session was over. I was one of the first to speak, so I didn’t even share that much. I just felt so much better to know I was not the only one who felt so broken and it would be ok if I cried.

After that session, we had a group collage session where we each started with one 12×12 of scrapbook paper and added some stuff to it, then passed it on to the person on our right. After about half a dozen or so people worked on it, this is what I got back. The original piece of scrapbook paper is here.

Next cool thing is that I sat next to Tana Mitchell and across from Lynda, Linda, Venita and Bev Perina. I tell you, these women are all wacky and unbelievably creative and generous and funny. We had a great time teasing each other, giving each other input, etc. I went to lunch with Tana. She took me to a great mexican place on the north end of town. I thought it was a hole in the wall, but it was nice and clean and homey inside and the food was A. MAZE. ING. I had a burrito smothered with green chile that would knock your socks off. We’re talking as good as Sadie’s in Albuquerque. I’ve always liked Tana a lot and she’s the first one who really made me feel welcome with that whole art group over there, so I was happy to spend some time with her. We talked a lot about some stuff that’s been hard for me and I felt so much better when lunch was over. She even treated. AND I got to have a sopapilla! mmmmmmmmmm sopapilla!

Today, I hope to finish the shrine, or at least have it close to finished. I have lots of gramma’s beads to glue in. i think it will be a blast.

Also, last night, i finished packaging my first set of greeting cards for selling online. I have a couple of extraneous ones to package and then I’ll be setting up shop! I’m quite excited.

good work!

Here’s the piece I finished in class yesterday:

And I’ve finished making my trades for AU, save for the necklace stringing, magnet gluing and putting my mark on the back.
