Take
old discards "gifted" to you by your mail delivery person and revive them into
something new and meaningful. In this class, you will create a small hand-bound
journal using rescued junk mail and bill envelopes to create a small journal
for yourself or for a special gift. The journal will be bound using a simple
stitch so we can focus on the fun of journaling and decorating the book. Students
will learn several methods of coloring and embellishing book pages using watercolor
sprays and stencils, stamps, and other mark-making tools. We will play with
abandon (that means NO THINKING!) and students will probably leave class with
at least 2 books in progress. All of the techniques you learn in this workshop
can be used in your journals, altered books and many other paper projects.
Supply List:
Students must bring the basics:
scissors
ruler
pen/pencil
your favorite brushes (for painting and for gluing)
craft knife
glue
stick
black permanent ink pad (My favorite is India Ink from Stewart Superior)
black permanent ink pen, such as Pitt
Optional supplies to bring (but there will be plenty to use during class in
your supply kit!):
Ephemera, images, stamps, embellishments
or symbols that speak to you, or to a specific theme you’d like for
this book. For example, one of my books incorporates birds and the feeling
of freedom that they evoke. Flowers can symbolize growth. Butterflies could
stand for new beginnings. You don’t need a ton of stuff – brads,
eyelets, rhinestones, stickers, rubons, nothing too huge or super dimensional.
Fibers
(at least 3″ long, so scraps are fine) in assorted colors to go with
your theme.
Beads for hanging on the fibers and binding strings, if desired.
Instructor will supply:
Junk mail envelopes
Magazines, book pages,
images, scraps of decorative paper for collage
An assortment of paints,
color sprays, gel crayons, watercolor crayons, pencils, china markers, rubber & foam
stamps, stencils, masks, pens, markers, ink pads
Bookbinding awl, waxed linen,
japanese screw punch, and bookbinding needle (yarn darner, tapestry needles
all work well) and binder clips.
Paper towels, baby wipes
An assortment
of glues. If you are bringing your own, bring your favorite “dry” or
quick-drying glue. Glue stick is just fine for attaching paper. If you bring
heavier items to glue, you might need Diamond Glaze, Tacky Glue or Glue Dots.
